Inner Listening, also known as Focusing, is a practice where we tune into what’s going on for us in the moment, acknowledging thoughts and stories that are at play whilst also listening at a deeper, more subtle level to how our body feels. We journey and explore what is present and this allows us to access a deep inner knowing that our bodies hold, what we might call our intuition or gut instinct.
As a Focusing Practitioner I hold the space for you without offering any advice, judgments or analysis. In a Focusing or Inner Listening session you will not be asked to disclose details or history about the issues you’re working on, though you may share them if you choose to. The emphasis is on your relationship with yourself and your body. I support you to meet your own experience with curiosity and compassion. To welcome in the whole of you, even the parts you might find difficult, painfully critical, embarrassing , ugly or shameful. Meeting our own experience in a non-judgemental, accepting way allows deep shifts and changes to happen. It can help us make sense of confusing feelings, past experiences and support us to meet difficult decisions or issues in our life that feel uncomfortable, tangled or stuck.
A Focusing or Inner Listening session is not the same as therapy or counselling, although it is a useful skill that clients and therapists may use. It is a practice that can be applied and used in many other disciplines such as creative writing or art, meditation or spiritual practice, bodywork or body based practices. It is an integral part of how I work as a Yoga and Movement Therapist.
Once you have learnt this approach, how to do Focusing and how to listen and accompany someone in a Focusing way, then you can practice it in a peer relationship, for free with someone who also knows Focusing. You may choose to continue to work with me or another Focusing Practitioner, you may practice Focusing alone or apply it to something else you do.
What happens in a Inner Listening / Focusing session…?
Sessions are a mixture of tuition and Focusing time. In the session you may want to be sat in a chair, on the floor, be lying down or stood up or moving. You can have your eyes open or closed, whatever feels right for you. I will gently guide you into the session and be there with you as your companion and guide. I will keep the time, letting you know a few minutes before the end of the session, leaving some time for questions and to explore anything that needs acknowledging before we close the session.
Time, Costs and Place
Sessions are 1 hour and cost £40, or £30 when you book a block of three.
